When Does It Snow in Hokkaido? First Snow, Snow Cover & Winter Travel Guide
First snow, snow cover and lasting snow are not the same
If you want to see the first flakes, your timing is very different from a trip planned around reliably snow-covered streets. In Sapporo, the 1991–2020 climate normals put the first snowfall around October 28, the first day with at least 1 cm of snow cover around November 12, and the start of lasting snow cover around December 6. A late-October snowfall therefore does not mean the whole city will stay white.
October: snow is possible in the mountains
Hokkaido is large and elevation matters. Mountain areas and passes can see snow or icy roads before central Sapporo, while low-lying cities may still look like late autumn. Furano's October climate normal records only about 2 cm of monthly snowfall depth in total, so October should not be treated as a reliable snow season.
November: the transition to winter
Inland areas cool more quickly. Furano's November normal mean temperature is about 2.1°C, with an average daily minimum around -2.1°C and about 72 cm of monthly snowfall depth. Conditions can still change quickly: snow may fall, melt and return after the next cold spell.
December: a better choice for city snow scenery
By December, many winter destinations are much closer to the snowy Hokkaido most visitors imagine. Furano's December normal mean temperature is around -5.1°C with about 159 cm of monthly snowfall depth. Conditions still differ between Hakodate, Sapporo, Asahikawa, eastern Hokkaido and mountain areas.
Sapporo vs Asahikawa and Furano
Sapporo is a major city on western Hokkaido, while Asahikawa and Furano are inland and generally colder. November climate normals are about 5.2°C in Sapporo and 2.3°C in Asahikawa, so weather and road conditions can change significantly within the same Hokkaido trip.
Winter travel tips
Choose footwear with grip for icy surfaces, leave extra time for transport delays, consider how easy your luggage is to move through snow, and remember that mountain weather can differ sharply from Sapporo. Daylight is shorter, so avoid overloading outdoor itineraries.
FAQ
Can it snow in Hokkaido in October? Yes, especially in mountain and high-elevation areas, but city snow is not guaranteed. Is there always snow in November? No. Inland areas such as Asahikawa and Furano are more likely to look wintry, but early snow can melt. For more reliable city snow scenery, December is generally a safer planning window than October or November. Data reference: Japan Meteorological Agency 1991–2020 climate normals.
