Eastern Hokkaido 5–6 Day Private Charter: Obihiro, Lake Akan, Lake Mashu & Kushiro

Do not use Sapporo as a daily base

Eastern Hokkaido is far from Sapporo. A realistic charter moves east and changes hotels, using Obihiro, Lake Akan and Kushiro as overnight bases rather than making repeated round trips to Sapporo.

5-day classic route

Day 1: New Chitose Airport → Obihiro via the Doto Expressway, with a rest stop en route; overnight Obihiro. Day 2: Obihiro / Tokachi sightseeing → Lake Akan; overnight Akanko Onsen. Day 3: Lake Akan → Lake Mashu → Lake Kussharo area → Kushiro; overnight Kushiro. Day 4: Kushiro and surrounding nature, keeping the day lighter after the previous transfers. Day 5: depart from Kushiro Airport where possible. Returning to New Chitose should be evaluated as a longer itinerary or with another transport mode.

6-day deeper route

With six days, spread Tokachi, Akan and the Mashu/Kussharo area across separate days. This creates more time for nature stops and reduces pressure to combine several long drives in one day. The exact sequence should follow flights, season and accommodation availability.

Who is this route for?

Eastern Hokkaido suits travelers focused on nature, lakes, wildlife, hot springs and a deeper regional trip. It is less suitable for travelers who want to return to Sapporo every night.

Winter and operational note

Winter roads, snowstorms and daylight can significantly change travel times in eastern Hokkaido. Keep long-distance days simple, allow proper driver breaks and avoid treating estimated mileage as a guaranteed schedule. The licensed transport operator makes the final operational confirmation.
